The Government is donating €40,000 in response to the United Nation’s call for urgent assistance to the Philippine regions afflicted by Typhoon Haiyan, one of the deadliest in the country's history.

In a statement this morning, the government said it hoped that the global humanitarian assistance would help the country overcome the destructive powers of the typhoon and rebuild the afflicted regions in the shortest time possible.

Typhoon Haiyan swept through several islands in the Philippines battering large tracts of land and leaving in its wake an almost apocalyptic destruction. Buildings were flattened, rivers swollen and thousands of people were left homeless and without possessions, while others are dead or still missing.
