The European Commission has approved funds to build a new recycling plant in Magħtab, similar to the one in Marsacala but much bigger.

It will be constructed by October 2015 and will recycle solid waste produced in the north. The plant will cost €60 million to build, with €27million coming from the EU and the rest from public funds.

EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn said the project would make sure Malta complied with EU standards in regard of solid waste management, reducing landfilling practices and increasing its control on waste flows.

He said inhabitants of the north will benefit from a less polluted environment and an improved quality of life.

The funds for this project form part of the €855 million of EU funds allocated to Malta for the 2007-2013 period.
