The European Commission has approved an investment of €27 million from the Cohesion Fund for the building of the new solid waste management project in Maghtab.

In a statement, it said the plant would reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, recycling the waste and producing energy.

Commenting on the decision, Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn said: “This project ensures that Malta complies with European standards as regards solid waste management, reducing landfilling practices and increasing its control on waste flows. The 60 000 inhabitants of the northern parts of Malta will benefit from a less polluted environment and an improved quality of life".

The project will cost a total of €59.2 million. Completion is expected in October 2015.
