Birkirkara, Malta’s largest town (population 22,319), will soon start using Greenpak waste recovery services, which now covers 55 per cent of local households. The scheme is operated by Greenpak Coop Society and authorised by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority.

The town, which currently recovers 14.2 tonnes of its recyclable waste per week has the potential to boost this figure to 44 tonnes a week. By using Greenpak’s waste separation infrastructure, which includes free recycling bags for every household, better recycling banks, a new kerbside collection of glass as from February, and direct collections from commercial outlets, the quantity of waste collected for recycling is set to increase.

Birkirkara mayor Joanne Debono Grech said it was of crucial importance for the council to manage the town’s waste better and improve the community’s environmental objectives through sustainable ways. She added that with its in-depth knowledge and professionalism Greenpak could help the council to educate and informing residents about the need to recycle, and thereby achieve these goals in an economical and practical manner.

Birkirkara has a substantial number of private businesses and is bordered by two industrial zones and Mater Dei Hospital.

Greenpak CEO Mario Schembri said his organisation recognised that, for most people, recycling means a change in ingrained old habits, but said that as it had done in other communities, the coop has the experience to bring about positive change. “With less waste going to the landfill, fewer resources are wasted and more taxpayers’ money is saved, which can be redirected by the local council to improve the locality for residents and the business community to enjoy,” he stressed.
