The winners of Europeana’s nation-wide cultural competition to choose images and write stories about Malta’s heritage were recently awarded prizes by Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport Stefan Buontempo

Among the recipients of prizes were Maltese Form 1 and 2 students who wrote the top 10 stories for Europeana’s storywriting competition describing a part of Maltese cultural heritage that the students found on Europeana.eu and that they think represents them as Maltese-European citizens. The stories have been published in Europeana’s ebook Europeana: Stories from Malta which may be downloaded from http://acrosslimits.com/ europeana-ebook.

The competition was one of three national contests launched by Europeana, together with its Maltese partner, Across Limits, as part of a nationwide campaign to introduce Malta to the millions of European cultural treasures that can be found on Europeana.eu, including books and manuscripts, photos and paintings, television and film, sculpture and crafts, diaries and maps.

In another competition, an image from Europeana.eu was chosen to represent Malta’s heritage. The winning image, nominated by Josephine Spiteri and voted for by the Maltese public, is an ancient map of Malta showing where St Paul was shipwrecked.

Dr Buontempo said that through Europeana’s initiative, Malta’s culture and heritage are being promoted throughout the world.

The Europeana website and the Malta in Europe – Europeana Facebook page are accessible at www.europeana.eu and www.facebook.com/EuropeanaMalta, respectively. Europeana may also be followed on Twitter@europeanaeu and #AllezCulture.
