The Strickland Foundation has launched the second phase of its three-year journalism internship scheme.

There is now no time limit within which applications can be made, and applications for new sponsorships will start being considered as from six weeks after the publication of this call.

The Foundation will limit the number of sponsorships to six, or to any number it may decide, in any one year. The conditions and commitments laid down in the original scheme remain basically the same.

The scheme is run by the foundation in partnership with Maltese media companies agreeing to take part.

Twenty-eight applications were received in the first phase of the scheme, but only three were accepted. One main constraint in recruitment was the applicants’ limited choice of preferences.

Under the scheme, applicants are required to specify the media organisations of their choice, indicating order of preference. Under the revised scheme, applicants would still have to specify the media organisation where they wish to do their internship if they are selected.

Media companies eligible to take part are those involved in the publication of national newspapers and/or magazines or other specialised publications, or in the production of news programmes for television and/or radio, or in the running of news electronic sites, or sites belonging to news and information organisations.

The newspapers, magazines, specialised publications, TV/radio programmes, or electronic sites, may be in Maltese or English language.

The foundation shall provide a maximum of €15,000 per candidate per annum for up to six candidates or any other number as it may decide.

The companies that have taken on interns under the first phase of the scheme are Allied Newspapers Limited, Standard Publications Limited, and PBS Limited.

The Strickland Foundation is a non-profit public benefit organisation set up by Mabel Strickland in 1979 to help improve the standard of Maltese journalism and promote democratic principles, human rights and other activities of direct benefit to the community.

Applications are to be sent to admin@thestricklandfoundation.com or The Strickland Foundation, Villa Parisio, Mabel Strickland Street, Lija.
