The Malta Union of Teachers has not yet been consulted by the Education Ministry about a pilot project on students' use of tablet computers, scheduled to start in January, union president Kevin Bonello said.

He was replying to questions following a news conference this morning held to commemorate the union’s 94th anniversary today.

Mr Bonello said that in view of the lack of consultation, the MUT’s directive to members not to take part in the project until an agreement about it was reached remained in force.

Although the MUT was not against the project, teachers had had to cope with a lot of new reforms over the years and they needed time to adjust.

Asked about the Breakfast Club proposed in the Budget, Mr Bonello said the MUT was concerned that for the club to be successful schools had to be given more funds to ensure there were enough staff to look after the children.

He said that the MUT was the oldest registered trade union still in existence.

To mark the event, the union will have a reception and Mass for members and a conference on school management is being held at the Dolmen Hotel tomorrow.

The union also launched a children’s Christmas book Leggendi tal-Milied and would be having an annual academic journal The Educator, which would replace The Teacher.
