Fourteen employees from eight manufacturing companies who successfully completed the Diploma Course in Manufacturing Excellence (Level 4) were presented with their certificates at an awards ceremony held recently at the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry in Valletta. This was the third group of employees to benefit from this Mcast programme.

This 360-hour diploma course, which is spread over two years, is a hybrid of classwork and hands-on mentored training.

It was created to enable employees in the industry candidates to acquire skills and knowledge to better understand and critically analyse various aspects of manufacturing, ranging from strategy to systems and techniques. The participants will be better prepared to take part in and contribute to the development process at their place of work and progress to higher levels of responsibility.

The course module included operations management – manufacturing strategy, internationalisation in manufacturing, manufacturing management, materials in manufacturing, quality management, energy and water management, introduction to lean manufacturing, financial management, product development and innovation, supply chain management and project management.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Mcast principal and CEO Stephen Cachia stressed the importance of lifelong learning, the re-skilling of the workforce and increasing workers’ employability. He said that through such courses, industry in Malta would be better able to remain competitive through a skilled workforce.

The certificates were presented to the students by Mr Cachia, Mcast registrar Ronald Curmi, and David Curmi, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry.
