St George’s 2
Gudja United 3
Ex-St George’s striker Anthony Ewurun came back to haunt his former side yesterday with a superb display and two goals that paved the way for Gudja’s win that lifted them to higher ground in the standings.
Gudja opened the score early on when the unmarked Ewurun hit home after picking a Ranier Buhagiar cross from the right.
But St George’s hit back immediately as they drew level when Jhonatan Beruardo Mapiano headed home from a Dylan Sammut free-kick.
John Emeka almost put the Saints ahead and then Abudl Razak saw his low shot from the edge of the area stopped by Gudja keeper Xerxen.
The second half started on a quieter note but the Saints still looked the better side and on the hour a Bernuardo Mapiano header finished inches wide.
On 69 minutes, Emeka darted into the Gudja box after some good work by Razak, with his grounder being saved by Xerxen.
At the other end, Ryan Dalli saw his effort being saved by Marmara for a corner.
Thirteen minutes from time Ewurun volleyed home from inside the area after a good cross by Clint Farrugia to put Gudja again in the lead.
Ewurun was a protagonist two minutes later when he was floored by substitute Anthony Bonello inside the box and a penalty was given. Mauro Brincat beat Marmara from the spot to make it 3-1.
Brincat wasted a golden opportunity to seal Gudja’s win when with only the goalkeeper to beat he dallied his action and the chance was lost.
Emeka pulled one back for St George’s in stoppage time but his effort came too late for the Cottonera side to save the match.
