Secondary students recently graduated from a Jamie Oliver home cooking skills course run by the International Vocational College Malta, St Julian’s. The internationally-recognised Btec qualification gives young people the skills to prepare delicious and nutritious home-cooked food – using fresh ingredients – as well as an understanding of the value of passing on cooking knowledge.
Celebrity chef and course originator Jamie Oliver said: “I felt I could do more to help. I wanted to see a cooking course in schools that would not only be fun and easy but also to be truly inspiring.” The course focuses on the recipes and ideas students learning through cooking, and this is what makes the course so different.
A spokesman for the college commented: “It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and passion for cooking among the young participants. Younger generations are expected to live shorter lives than their parents because of the way they eat. The key to tackling these big problems lies in the kitchen. This home cooking skills course is much more than a qualification: it’s a way of sharing a critical life skill with as many people as possible.”
Scotts Supermarket supplied the students with ingredients throughout the course.
