Photo: DanielM PhotographyFurther to the success of Dazzle! – The Children’s Musical that was staged last month at De La Salle College, DLS Productions is aiming for bigger things as rehearsals are underway for a new production, Carmen – The Rock Musical.
It has always been the wish of DLS Productions to come up with something innovative, new and original for the Maltese theatre season, and scriptwriter Lucienne Camilleri has certainly risen to the challenge by taking on the idea of transforming the opera Carmen into a rock musical.
The original opera is based around the timeless tale of the fight for love, and DLS Productions’ adaptation recreates the same story, only this time it has been brought to life with 21st-century New York as its backdrop.
The modern twist to the original storyline gave the company the opportunity to experiment with a completely different and exhilarating soundtrack.
The result of collective brainstorming between choreographer Samantha Dela, producer Stefania Grech and scriptwriter/director Lucienne Camilleri, Carmen – the Rock Musical features 18 cuts of classic, alternative and pop rock from various eras.
In a nutshell, the musical tells the story of how Carmen (Tezara Camilleri) finds herself torn between two lovers – Ryder (Samuel Mamo), a budding rock performer still waiting for his big break, and Pierce (Andrew Barberi), a successful financial entrepreneur who has it all.
The musical features live rock music with a strong all-singing, all-dancing cast of 30 performers who will be belting out tunes from the likes of Queen, U2, Pink Floyd and Guns ‘n’ Roses, among others.
Carmen – The Rock Musical will be held on November 22, 23 and 24 at the Catholic Institute, Floriana, at 8pm. Tickets cost €18 and are available online or by calling on 7984 8788.
