Following their success with Dazzle! The Children’s Musical last month at De La Salle College, DLS Productions are going for a double whammy as rehearsals have been under way for Carmen – The Rock Musical.

It has always been the wish for DLS Productions to come up with something innovative, new and original for the Maltese theatre season. It was this idea that got the scriptwriter, Lucienne Camilleri, thinking and pondering on how to do it, and that is where the idea of Carmen came about.

Carmen (the opera) is an opera about the timeless tale of the fight for love. DLS Production recreated this same timeless tale by bringing it back to life through a 21st century New York framework. The modern twist to the original storyline gave the company the opportunity to experiment with a completely different and exhilarating soundtrack through the use of rock, alternative rock, and rock-pop music from various eras.

This is where the vhoreographer (Samantha Dela) and the producer (Stefania Grech), together with the scriptwriter/director of the show, Lucienne Camilleri – put their music tastes together and came up with the right 18 songs to guarantee a great night out for all those attending.

This musical tells the story of how Carmen (Tezara Camilleri) finds herself in between two lovers. Ryder (Samuel Mamo) and Pierce (Andrew Barberi) battle it out to try and win over Carmen’s heart. Ryder is a budding rock performer who is still looking for his big break, as his agent, friend and local bar owner Stan (Noel Zarb) tries to sign him up for a few gigs here and there.

Pierce, is a successful business man in the finance sector and has it all going on for him topped off with a great office partner (Thomas Camilleri) and a stunning fiancée (Chrissy Warrington).

Carmen is the third and most important point in this love triangle. She is craved by two men yet her heart holds the capacity for just one. Who gets the girl? Who succumbs to the madness of true love? Who gets caught in the fire of emotions?

This same fire will burn on through song, dance, and live rock music with a strong all-singing, all-dancing cast of 30 performer who will be belting out tunes from Queen, U2, Pink Floyd and Guns ‘n’ Roses among others.

Carmen – The Rock Musical is being held at the Catholic Institute in Floriana on November 22,23 and 24 at 8pm. Tickets can be booked by calling on 7984 8788 or by logging in to www.dlsdrama.com.
