Truly anti-magnetic

OMEGA creates the first truly anti-magnetic watch movement.OMEGA creates the first truly anti-magnetic watch movement.

Omega recently announced the creation of a watch that is resistant to magnetic fields greater than 1.5 tesla (15,000 gauss), far exceeding the levels of magnetic resistance achieved by any previous watch and solving a problem that has challenged watchmakers for centuries.

The technology developed led to the first prototype of the movement, which has been fitted in an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra. Unlike other efforts to combat the effects of magnetism, the Omega movement does not rely on a protective container inside the watchcase but on the use of selected non-ferrous materials in the movement itself.

Magnetism has always been an issue for watchmakers, and magnets are now more present in our daily lives than they have ever been before. It is necessary for watchmakers to demagnetise mechanical watches whose performance has been compromised by exposure to magnetic fields.

Magnetism had previously been dealt with in several ways, including inner cases designed to limit the effect of magnetism. However, there are several limitations to such approaches including the fact that they can’t handle the challenge of the increased strength of permanent magnets, a problem that will be solved by the new movement.

Omega watches are exclusively available at Diamonds International in Valletta and Portomaso.

Drive towards perfection

Bulova 96B175 Precisionist.Bulova 96B175 Precisionist.

For over 138 years, Bulova has stood proudly in the vanguard of American innovation. A pioneering force in the industry since opening a small store in Lower Manhattan, New York, in 1875, Joseph Bulova transformed how watches were worn and how time was perceived.

An independent thinker alert to the era’s risk-taking ethos, Bulova presented one innovation after another, establishing a dedication to creativity and change that endures to the present day.

From Bulova’s first jewelled wristwatches in 1919, to the introduction of the world’s first fully electronic watch, Accutron, in 1960, to the latest achievement, Precisionist, Bulova has transformed the field of horology.

Having created some of the most impressive innovations in the history of timekeeping technology, in the process of improving the accuracy of timepieces to a previously unfathomable 10 seconds a year, Bulova has upheld the original mission established by its founder, Joseph Bulova, who declared some 80 years ago: “When I started, I made up my mind that quality would be the foundation upon which I would build. I can only say that I have always tried with my whole heart and soul to make everything I made as perfect as an honest human effort could possibly make it. This same principle upon which I founded the business is still the foundation which we build.”

Over 138 years after the company’s inception, Bulova proudly continues to uphold this legacy. In August 2013, Bulova announced a sponsorship agreement to become the official timekeeping partner of Manchester United.

Bulova timepieces are exclusively represented in Malta by Zekka Enterprise, 5, St Michael Street, San Ġwann.

Accurate time, anywhere on earth

Seiko Astron GPS Solar.Seiko Astron GPS Solar.

At last, the search for totally precise time, everywhere on the planet, is over. By developing its own patented, low-energy-consumption GPS receive, Seiko has been able to create a watch that can received GPS signals and identify time zone, time and date data using the global network of GPS satellites.

The Seiko Astron GPS Solar recognises all the 39 time zones on earth, using just the power of light. Once a day, Seiko Astron receives the time signal automatically and, on demand, connects to four or more of the GPS satellites that orbit the earth, thus pinpointing its position and identifying the exact time and time zone.

The hands adjust automatically to the correct local time with atomic clock precision. Seiko Astron is solar powered so it never needs a battery change, and it also has a perpetual calendar, so the date will always be accurate, up to February 2100, irrespective of leap years.

Five reasons to own an Oris watch

For over 100 years Oris has been making watches in Switzerland. Oris watches are purely mechanical and are marked by their distinctive design as well as the red rotor, the symbol of Oris mechanicals.

Proud heritage

Oris has been manufacturing mechanical watches in the village of Hölstein in the Jura Mountains since 1904, without interruption.

Purely mechanical

Oris only produces mechanical watches. Not a single battery-powered watch leaves the Oris workshops. The symbol of Oris mechanicals is the red rotor, a sign of the natural power that fuels Oris watches, and a registered trademark.

Swiss made

Oris watches are manufactured by Swiss craftsmen and have passed rigorous quality control tests before they leave the workshops in Hölstein. They’re made for everyday wear and, on signing up to MyOris, come with a three-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Genuine

Oris offers the luxury of common sense. That means Oris offers customers the best possible watch for their money, using useful complications and functional designs.

Independent

Oris is one of the few Swiss watch companies to remain independent and run by its owners.
