Let me be honest. I’m always honest—promise—but this time I want to be honester.

I’m worried. I’m worried sick. The things that are happening around us are supremely worrying. Malta is getting back to the times when we were gripped by fear. I’m not certain what this fear is all about but slowly we are getting to the horrid times of old when we would not speak out openly.

Let me say it YET AGAIN: under the PN life was hardly paradise. But even the worst of the excesses of Gonzi and his nefarious sidekicks was children’s play compared to what is happening right now.

It might have been a heinous crime to take photos at airport security. But may I ask one simple silly question: was this the first time it has happened? Can we have a list of all the people these last 5 years who took photos there and were taken in for questioning for 4 full hours by the police?

I believe in coincidences. I believe in tough luck. But that Norman Vella was arrested for allegedly taking these terrible photos when a high-ranking official of the Government was on his way to join other Government officials abroad is a bit much.

You know as much as I can ever believe that the best envoy for us in China is a minister’s wife and that a soldier from the lowest ranks should be catapulted to the top posts of our Army. And that our prime minister does not know who his special envoys are. And that ferries are called back and car parks cleared by ministers out to prove that these islands of ours are still thought to be medieval fiefdoms where the top few are smug enough to drive us all, dumb serfs that we are, insaner by the minute.

In the meantime making us all quiver and shake and shut up.
