Valletta WPC, representing the Malta side in the LEN Cup at the National Pool, put on another commendable performance yesterday, this time against Georgia’s Dinamo Tbilisi.
The sound display was backed by discipline even if more movement and rotation was required. Goalkeeper Alan Borg Cole provided inspiration with some fine point-blank saves.
All in all, the result goes some way towards instilling more confidence in view of further commitments ahead.
The locals led 4-3 after the first session with Jordan Camilleri scoring his second goal almost on the stroke of time. The other goals came from Jerome Gabarretta and captain Niki Lanzon.
After Matthew Zammit made it 5-3, the visitors scored four goals in a row to take a 7-5 lead. But, Gabarretta reduced the gap for a 7-6 scoreline at the half-way stage.
With Lanzon directing operations efficiently, the Maltese were still very much in it despite going 10-9 behind by the end of the third quarter.
At this point, the potent Zammit had reached his hat-trick.
Six goals were shared in the last session, with the Maltese leading 12-11 with just over two minutes left.
Then, Dinamo managed to turn it around for a 13-12 victory with the last goal coming 47 seconds from time.
