A 61-year-old man from Kalkara, Joseph Caruana, was shot dead in his home town this morning. His 27-year-old daughter Simone and her three-year-old daughter were injured.

The police said Mr Caruana was hit when several shots were fired at 10.50am in an argument between Ms Caruana and a 52-year-old man.

It is understood that the 52-year-old is Ms Caruana's former partner, with whom she has four children.

Ms Caruana was with her father taking the children to see their dad.

Following the incident, she grabbed her children and left the scene, seeking refuge at a nearby residence where a policeman stationed with the Rapid Intervention Unit lived. The policeman went to the scene of the crime and arrested the aggressor.

Ms Caruana and her daughter were then taken to hospital. Ms Caruana suffered grievous injuries but is not in a critical condition while the child was slightly injured.

An inquiry is being held.
