Joseph Calleja has been invited to perform for the justices at the US Supreme Court in Washington DC on November 25.

Justice Ruth Ginsburg, known to be an opera fan, will make the opening remarks while Chief Justice John Roberts will speak after the performance.

The tenor will be taken on a private tour of the court before heading to a private dinner in the Justices’ Dining Room.

The performance at the Supreme Court will take place while Mr Calleja is in Chicago for a month-long run of La Traviata.

He will then head to the Metropolitan Opera in New York to perform La Bohème between January 14 and 30.

Mr Calleja’s new album, Amore, featuring, selection of popular Romantic songs, reached number in the UK Classical Charts. The tenor will be returning to the UK in April to perform Faust at the Royal Opera House in London.

On Friday the tenor, together with Bank of Valletta, launched the BOV Joseph Calleja Foundation aimed at helping vulnerable people.

The foundation will place particular emphasis on underprivileged children as well as children with innovative, distinctive or unique artistic or musical talents who are unable to develop or enhance their artistic gift.

The members on the board running the foundation are Roderick Chalmers, chairman; Fr Michael Agius, Lino Cefai, Helga Ellul, Alec Lapira, Michelle Muscat and Alfred Pisani.
