Green Pak Coop Society, in collaboration with 12 local councils, recently launched a clothes collection scheme in aid of Inspire Foundation, whereby residents are being invited to donate any unused or unwanted clothing items to be sold to help raise funds for the foundation.

The participating local councils are Attard, Valletta, Għaxaq, Gudja, Kirkop, Paola, Pembroke, Qrendi, Sliema, Xagħra, Xewkija and Żurrieq. Residents from all localities are encouraged to deliver any unused or unwanted clothes, shoes, handbags or any other accessories in good condition to any of these councils’ premises on January 25, 2014 between 8 and 11.30am.

Green Pak senior manager Denise Brincat said: “In the waste hierarchy, reusing products keeps new resources at a minimum, while at the same time limiting the generation of waste. Green Pak is encouraging residents to extend the life of an unused or unwanted item by donating it towards a noble cause.”

Inspire Foundation CEO Nathan Farrugia said the donated items would be distributed to Inspire’s charity shops and the funds collected from their sale would help provide better services to those in need. Inspire was grateful for such initiatives, “as they help us raise much needed funds that go towards the running of our programmes for people with a disability, enabling them to reach their full potential by focusing on their ability rather than disability”.

Environment Minister Leo Brincat, who was present for the launch, praised the initiative and recognised the positive blend of community enterprise with recycling to raise funds for people with disability in Malta.

Green Pak is a not-for-profit co-operative society owned by over 1,000 members. It runs Malta’s largest waste recovery scheme authorised by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority and is a founding member of Expra, the European organisation promoting producer responsibility schemes internationally. Green Pak is also backed by ProEurope, an umbrella organisation of 35 national producer responsibility systems engaged in the selective collection and recycling of packaging waste.

Inspire is a not-for-profit organisation that provides therapeutic, education and leisure services to people with disabilities in Malta.
