I was caught out the other day by the introduction of the new one-way system at High Street, Amery Street and George Borg Olivier Street in Sliema. It was changed without notice; no wardens, no police, just chaos – and therefore a danger to road users. Where were the police? Where were the wardens? Guarding a crane no doubt!
Having said that, this is a fantastic move forward for Sliema: it means improved traffic flow and more parking spaces.
But the traffic problem will continue to exist unless the poor road traffic signage for the new system is improved. The new “no left turn” sign at the top of St Vincent Street is extremely small and overshadowed by an old clearway sign. A large “no left turn” sign needs to be placed there. There need to be several blue one-way signs on High Street, especially at exits, for example from St Vincent and George Borg Olivier streets.
There is no “no right turn” sign from St Vincent Street into St Lawrence Street, even though all the other streets have them. Vehicles often make this illegal turn, especially now with the new system, endangering the children and indeed an 84-year-old woman who lives there.
I appeal to the local council and Transport Malta to finish a great idea properly and with some expertise and care.
Maybe some of Malta’s worst road surfaces could also be resurfaced; I am referring to Sliema and Gżira. Worse than Zimbabwe’s, our Third World roads shame this great country.
