Jake Morris, 36, from Sliema, who claimed to be a screenwriter, was condemned to a suspended jail term today after he was caught on CCTV shoplifted at Scotts supermarket in Sliema.

He also stole the purse of a woman in the supermarket, taking some €50.

Mr Morris was recognised last week by store manager Romina Tanti when he returned to steal from the same establishment. She tried to stop him he pushed her and fled.

Ms Tanti and another employee, Marika Schembri, ran after him and saw him push a man who tried to stop him. The women got into a car belonging to a salesman and chased him back to his apartment where the police were called and he was arrested, the court heard.

The court sentenced him to 18 months in jail suspended for three years and warned him of the consequences of committing another crime.
