Europeana, Europe’s digital museum, library, gallery and archive, is inviting Form 1 and 2 students to take part in a nationwide story-writing competition on what Malta’s European cultural heritage means to them.

The writer of the best story will be awarded with a Google Nexus 7 tablet, while the top 20 stories will be published in an ebook by Europeana, especially designed to mark the students’ participation in this competition. The ebook will be launched during the National Book Fest in November.

To participate in the competition, Form 1 and 2 students are to find an image from www.europeana.eu that they feel represents them as Maltese and European citizens. They then need to write a story of between 200 and 350 words in Maltese or English about their chosen image and give it a catchy title.

Participants must submit their story by uploading the application form accessible at www.acrosslimits.com/Europeana-Story-Template.docx.

The competition closing date is October 27.

The competition is part of Europeana’s national campaign to introduce the people of Malta to the cultural treasures of Europeana, where one can go online to find more than 29 million items from 2,300 leading galleries, libraries, archives and museums. Books and manuscripts, photos and paintings, television and film, sculpture and crafts, diaries and maps, sheet music and recordings can all be discovered.

Speaking about the competition, Europeana executive director Jill Cousins said she hoped it would help introduce Malta’s secondary school students to the cultural treasures available at Europeana.eu., which she said “creates new ways for everyone to engage with their cultural history, whether it’s for work, learning or play”.
