Helen Muscat, one of the founders of the Malta Hospice Movement and the Breast Cancer Foundation, has died.

She passed away this morning, aged 57.

This is what she wrote on the website of the Action for Breast Cancer Foundation website:

"I Have always been involved with cancer patients and their families since my early nursing days.

I received a nurses uniform from my parents one Christmas. From the age of 5 years it was my pride and joy to wear it when my father, a clergyman, took me to visit sick and elderly.I grew up in the north of England. When I married, eventually Peter and I settled in Malta. Peter’s family always made me feel at home and our two sons have grown up here.

Work with cancer patients in Malta started when Peter and I were founder members of Hospice Malta. I used and developed my nursing skills and spent three years caring for patients in their homes.

Through Hospice Malta I set up a Breast Care Support Group, after leaving Hospice in agreement with Hosica Malta, I kept on with this group for many years.

My nursing career saw me as Matron at Zammit Clapp Hospital where I spent many happy years. I also worked at St Philip’s Hospital. In between these posts I also studied English and started to teach English at a language school. But it was not long before hospital life beckoned and I joined the St James Hospital Group. I stopped working and also decided to move on from the work I had done with the support group.I think I sensed something was not quite right, then I was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago in May. It is five years since Esther and I started working on the idea of setting up a lobbying organisation that could also offer help to women with breast cancer and also to those health care professionals who care for women and men with breast cancer.

So, ABCF was born and our achievements are all listed on our website. I am so proud of the positive way in which we have worked with government and other voluntary organisations to improve the breast care service in Malta and Gozo.

Unfortunately my health has not been so good lately, this has meant I have been limited in what I can do for ABCF, but with our strong team we continue to see ABCF firmly established as a respected organisation."
