A Libyan who “ends up in court every time he gets drunk” was arraigned again yesterday.

Yousri Agouri, 33, who lives in Fgura, was charged with colliding with a car when driving dangerously while drunk on Monday night in St Julian’s.

He was also charged with threatening and assaulting policemen, breaching bail conditions and committing the crime during the operative period of a suspended jail term. Police Inspector Luke Bonello told Magistrate Charmaine Galea that every time Mr Agouri got drunk he ended up in court facing the same crimes.

He pointed out that the accused had already been granted bail in two separate cases and convicted in another. “Whether he admits it or not, he has a drink problem”, Mr Bonello, objecting to bail being granted.

Defence lawyer Joe Brincat, who admitted he too had a ‘drinking’ problem because he consumed too much coffee, insisted that it was his client’s right to be granted bail.

Magistrate Galea, presiding over her first sitting as duty magistrate, granted Mr Agouri bail against a deposit of €400and a personal guarantee of €8,000.

Mr Agouri asked her to lower the deposit saying he sent his children to a private school and could not afford to pay until the end of the month. The court refused and Mr Agouri was remanded in custody until he paid the deposit.
