Noel Calleja, 33 of Sta Venera has been jailed for three years after he admitted to seriously injuring his former girlfriend on July 10, 2011 when he tried to kill her.

He also admitted to being in unlawful possession of a knife and relapsing.

His defence counsel at the time, Jose' Herrera, had said that had plea bargaining been possible in the Magistrates' Court, it would probably result that this was a case of serious injury not attempted murder.

Sources said that the injuries suffered by the victim were superficial cuts, not stab wounds. He admitted to the charges of serious injury.

Last year, Mr Calleja was charged with with the attempted murder of MMDNA nurse Jacqueline Depasquale, seriously injuring her, holding her and Nicola Cutajar against their will, stealing an MMDNA car, damaging another car and relapsing.

Before he was charged he had spent four hours threatening to commit suicide as he sat on a horizontal pole in ta’ Farsina, Qormi.
