Frederick Van Lierde (picture) won the 2013 Ironman World Championship race in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, yesterday. Toppling a six-year Australian winning streak, the Belgium triathlete crossed the finish line in 8:12:29. Luke McKenzie, of Australia, was second (8:15:19) and Germany’s Sebastian Kienle, the pre-race favourite, third (8:19.24). Mirinda Carfrae, of Australia, won the women’s Ironman in 8:52.14. The distances covered by participants were 3.86km swim, 180.25km cycle and 42.2km run.
