Captain Phillips, the film starring Tom Hanks and which was shot in Malta, has been released in the US and is already receiving rave reviews worldwide with the actor being widely tipped for an Oscar nomination.

“This movie will, no doubt, put Malta back on the map as a viable filming location,” said unit production manager Katryna Samut-Tagliaferro, who was responsible for attracting the film-makers to Malta.

Most of the scenes shot in Malta last year were out at sea and about 50 Maltese formed part of the film crew.

Filming was spread over two months on a leased container ship that would sail from Boiler Wharf for 12-hour long shooting a couple of miles outside OF Grand Harbour.

“Some of the trickier scenes with Tom Hanks were filmed inside the tanks at the Mediterranean Film Studios,” said Ms Samut-Tagliaferro. Captain Phillips will hit the screens in Malta on Friday.
