October is dedicated to national poet Dun Karm Psaila. Born in Żebbuġ on October 18, 1871, he died on October 13, aged 90.

A remembrance ceremony for schoolchildren, organised by the National Festivities Committee and the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education, will be held on Friday near the mon­u­ment of Dun Karm in Floriana.

The day starts with a cortege of schoolchildren that leaves Floriana primary school at 10.15am for the poet’s monument.

The children will read poems by Dun Karm, after which speeches will be made by Education Minister Evarist Bartolo and director-general for quality and standards in education Grace Grima.

Mary Rose Mallia will sing several of his poems, with original music by composer Dominic Galea.

At 6.30pm, the committee and the Akkademja tal-Malti will hold a musico-literary evening at the National Library in Valletta.

Poems by Dun Karm will be acted out by students of Josette Ciappara. Doreen Galea will sing poems of Dun Karm to music by Galea.Oliver Friggieri will close the evening with a talk on Dun Karm.
