Vodafone Malta launched its 4G network this morning, making it the first mobile telephony company to roll out the service here.

Chief Executive Balesh Sharma said the development took six months to roll out and came at a cost of €10 million.

"This puts Malta on the technological map," Mr Sharma said, adding very few countries had 4G broadband networks. The network will provide higher internet speeds for users.

The unveiling was made in the presence of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Vodafone group CEO Vittorio Colao.

Dr Muscat said the roll out of this investment showed Vodafone's confidence in the country. He said Malta wanted to be on the cutting edge of innovation. "We do not want to miss the bus, despite the fact we need to improve our bus service, which we will be doing in the coming months," Dr Muscat said, a comment that brought a smile to those present.

The first live transmission over wireless 4G broadband was carried out seamlessly during the press launch, held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Paceville, with a live link to Vodafone's offices at Skyparks.
