The 298th anniversary of the dedication of the Gozo Cathedral to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be commemorated with a pontifical concelebrated Mass, led by Gozo bishop Mario Grech at the Cathedral on Friday at 6pm. All priests of the Gozo diocese are invited to participate in the concelebration.

During the event, Mgr Grech will inaugurate his second pastoral visit to the Gozo diocese, during which he intends to visit each and every parish of Gozo over a period of time to meet all sectors of the community, whether religious, social or municipal.

The Gozo Cathedral, which replaced a medieval church, was dedicated on October 11, 1716, in a 24-hour-long ceremony, led by Jacobus Cañaves, bishop of Malta and Gozo.

The cathedral was built to a design by acclaimed Maltese architect Lorenzo Cafà. Its foundation stone was laid on September 21, 1697, and the new church was inaugurated on the eve of Santa Marija, 1711.
