Short films produced and directed by young film-makers will be shown at Film Swar as part of the Notte Bianca events today.

Organised by the Malta Film Commission and the Malta Film Network, the aim of the event is to further enhance local audience’s appreciation towards the capabilities of Maltese film-makers and generate awareness and support for the growth of an indigenous film industry.

Highlights will include the screening of The Battle of Malta, which was produced by MayaVision International for the BBC, where historian James Holland presents a fresh analysis of the World War II battle for our island.

This will be followed by one of the earliest feature films shot in Malta, Tell England, the 1931 film based on the novel of the same name by Ernest Raymond. The story features two young men joining the army, and taking part in the fighting at Gallipoli. The director’s father, Herbert Asquith, was prime minister at the time of the Gallipoli Landings, a fact which drew much press attention to the film. Filming in Malta took place at Għajn Tuffieħa, Mġiebaħ and Marsaxlokk, where the tragic scenes of the landings at Gallipoli were shot. Film Swar will also be paying special tribute to legendary Italian film director and scriptwriter Federico Fellini.

Screenings will be projected on the St John’s Bastions in Ordance Street, from 7pm until late. The short films to be shown are Katrina, directed by Eleonora Rose Abela; Magdalene, directed by Rebecca Cremona; The Medic, directed by Ray Mizzi; Tele-Monkey, directed by Martin Bonnici; Rokna, directed by Chris Zarb; Reflections in the Emerald Isle, directed by Mark Magro; Blown Away, directed by Matthew Muscat Drago; Il lungo viaggio (Federico Fellini) from La Fondazione Federico Fellini; and Daqqet ix-xita, directed by Kenneth Scicluna.

Documentaries The Phoenicians, directed by Chris and Maurice Micallef; Valletta, Bulwark of the Last Crusade, directed by Abigail Mallia (Take2); and The Tal-Qadi Stone, directed by Chris and Maurice Micallef, will also feature.

This event is free of charge.
