FIFA chiefs and the English Premier League (EPL) have already identified November/December as their favoured option for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar if it is moved to the winter, it can be disclosed.

Although FIFA’s executive committee is only expected to agree in principle to moving the tournament today, rather than set any new date, the November/December option has already emerged as the most likely change, according to sources close to the world governing body.

That position however faces fierce opposition from UEFA president Michel Platini who wants a January tournament which would not clash with the Champions League.

Platini had been the most fervent advocate of a 2022 winter World Cup but this week has been adamant there should be no decision by FIFA’s executive committee tomorrow.

The November/December plan emerged as the most favoured option at a meeting between Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore and FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke, with FA general secretary Alex Horne also involved.

That time suits FIFA because it ensures there is no clash with the 2022 winter Olympics - the IOC’s winter Games usually falls in the first three months of the year.

Even though the Premier League is opposed to any decision before a full consuItation takes place, it would be its best option for several reasons.

There are already two international dates in November and none in January.

A World Cup in the proposed timeframe would guarantee an end to the World Cup by mid-December – allowing the traditional club Christmas programme to take place as normal.

Besides it would interfere less with the build-up to the climax of the league season than a long break in January/February.

Valcke confirmed last month any solution would leave the Christmas week free for club football.
