As cyclists lobby to have their mode of transport given more importance by the authorities, they find their road to legitimacy often blocked – literally.

On one road, that leading to Ċirkewwa constructed only a year ago, cyclists have been frustrated to find street furniture and signage planted bang in the middle of their cycle path.

The Bicycle Advocacy Group yesterday said cyclists had been posting photos of this state of affairs online and it appealed to the transport authority to show common sense on the matter.

It said the contractor responsible for these works had been notified and would be removing the objects.

The group also complained, however, that having cycling paths in rural areas with a 6km/h speed limit was pointless.

This made the lanes a waste of taxpayers’ money as well as a source of frustration for motorists, cyclists and tourists.

Group spokesman Jim Weightman said roads in rural areas should have proper cycle lanes especially where there is plenty of room.
