Today marks the 35th anniversary of the sudden death of Pope John Paul I.

The former Cardinal Albino Luciani, forever remembered as 'The Smiling Pope' was Pope for just 33 days, making 1978 the year of the three Popes. He was elected on August 26 and was found dead on September 28.

He had succeeded Pope Paul VI and was himself succeeded by Pope John Paul II.

The footage above shows his last audience and public appearance on the penultimate day of his life.
