The very last grapes to be pressed this year by Delicata rolled into their winery by the crateful last week, seven weeks after pressing started on August 2.
Delicata has pressed well in excess of a million kilos of Malta- and Gozo- grown grapes and the very last one to be gently ‘squeezed’ was Malta’s own unique white grape variety, Girgentina.
This indigenous Maltese grape variety, which has been championed by Delicata for years, is a large, loose-bunched variety, with amber-coloured, thick-skinned berries that are both fragrant and fruity. The resulting wines are crisp, slightly ‘mineral’ and full-flavoured and produce good-quality dry white wines on their own, like the semi-sparkling Girgentina Frizzato, or blended with Chardonnay as in the Medina Chardonnay Girgentina, or with Vermentino and Viognier to produce the company’s ever popular Pjazza Regina IGT Maltese Islands white.
