A tower crane collapsed yesterday, landing within centimetres of a crowded classroom window and slightly injuring a worker.

The crane scraped against the side wall of St Teresa Boys Secondary School, Birkirkara, during morning lessons. It was being used to complete works on the artificial turf football pitch.

No children were injured but one worker was taken to hospital with slight injuries after the crane’s suspended cage, in which he was working, fell some two storeys.

The incident occurred less than 24 hours after Education Minister Evarist Bartolo inaugurated the facilities.

A witness said the worker was trapped inside the fenced pitch as the toppled crane blocked the only entrance gate.

He was eventually rescued by the crane’s driver, who cut through the fence.

Construction firm Mark TLS Group said it had not yet been established what caused the crane to lose equilibrium.
