Prime Minister Joseph Muscat late yesterday had talks in New York with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Both are attending the UN General Assembly.

Dr Muscat said Russia was a strategic partner with which Malta wanted to deepen its economic and political relationship.

The agenda for the two countries includes ratification of a double taxation avoidance agreement, collaboration in the fight against organised crime, and an agreement to regulate child adoptions.

The Russian minister said there was potential for improved relations and trade exchanges, and said the two sides should have regular meetings.
