The six Maltese athletes taking up the Tough Mudder challenge will be leaving Malta on Friday for the challenge on Saturday.

Designed by the British Special Forces, only 78 per cent of participants manage to finish the gruelling 16-19 kilometre courses said to put strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie to test.

Calling themselves Tough Mudder 1565, the team has been training since March to prepare themselves for obstacles involving mud, ice-cold water, fire and electric shocks.

Sponsored by Bet90, a betting agency specialised in football bets, Tough Mudder 1565 will leave Malta for Wales on Friday to participate in the challenge on Saturday.

The team is made up of Luke Dimech, 34, Matthew Saliba, 32, Amy Cachia, 24, Leonard Padovani, 23, Simon Xuereb, 33, and Guillaume Boulais, 30.

The team is raising funds for UK charity Help for Heroes which helps in the rehabilitation of severely injured servicemen and servicewomen. People can donate here.

Tough Mudder 1565 hopes to recruit a bigger Maltese contingent next year to raise more money for local charities.
