Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez, a former musician and coal miner certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest man, has died at 112.

Mr Sanchez-Blazquez died at a nursing home in Grand Island, New York.

Nicknamed “Shorty”, Mr Sanchez-Blazquez became the world’s oldest man when Jiroemon Kimura died in June at 116.

Mr Sanchez-Blazquez was born on June 8, 1901, in Spain.

He moved to Cuba at 17, then to the US in 1920 where he worked in the coal mines of Lynch, Kentucky. He eventually moved to the Niagara Falls area. He had two children, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. (AP)

Raiders are given a shoeing

A shop worker successfully fought off two masked raiders – with one of his shoes.

Police praised the man’s “heroic actions” as the robbers left empty-handed from the service station in Westhoughton, Bolton, UK.

The member of staff took off one of his shoes and grabbed a glass jar when he was confronted by his knife-wielding assailants, who later ran off. (PA)

Police shoot two bystanders

Police officers fired three shots on a crowded Manhattan street near Times Square, missing the man they believed had a weapon but striking two bystanders, police said.

Police said officers saw a man on foot weaving erratically through traffic.

After approaching him, the man reached into his pocket as if grabbing a weapon, and two officers fired a total of three shots. They missed him but struck a 54-year-old woman in the right knee and a grazed a 35-year-old woman in the buttocks.

The women were taken to hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.

Neither had injuries considered life threatening, police said. The man was taken into custody after being subdued him with a Taser. No weapons were found on him. (PA)

Blair attends son’s wedding

Former British prime minister Tony Blair has seen his eldest son Euan get married.

The marriage of Euan, 29, to long-term girlfriend Suzanne Ashman, 25, took place at All Saints parish church in Wotton Underwood, Buckinghamshire.

An Anglican church was chosen for the service, despite the fact Euan was raised as a Catholic along with his three siblings, and his father converted to the religion in 2007.

At one point ahead of the ceremony Blair was seen affectionately touching his son’s face and giving him a kiss on the cheek.

The bride, daughter of motor racing entrepreneur Jonathan Ashman, who is married to TV weather presenter Sian Lloyd, wore a sleeveless ivory dress with a lace overlay and a full veil. (PA)

Biggest ever packet of crisps

A British food company has bagged a world record – by making the biggest ever packet of crisps.

Corkers Crisps, based at Little Downham, near Ely, has produced the bag which is the size of a house, and contains more than a ton of crisps, the BBC reported.

It is said to more than double a previous record set in Japan last summer. (PA)

South Korea’s invisible tower

South Korea has approved plans to build a 1,476ft tower that can be turned virtually invisible.

Tower Infinity will be equipped with an LED projector and a camera system that can throw up images that “cloak” the building.

The building will be located near Incheon International Airport, near Seoul, officials said. (PA)
