The hunters' federation (FKNK) has urged its members to report any hunting illegalities to the police.

In a statement, the federation said that illegalities could not be tolerated and it would take drastic disciplinary action against any member who was found in serious breach of the relative regulations, to the point of membership revocation, without which hunting licence renewal is not possible.

The federation urged its members to ensure that those involved in illegalities are brought to action - including whoever shot down a black stork yesterday.

Illegal hunting may be reported on telephone 21224001.

"It has again been made evidently clear that legal hunting, and therefore genuine hunters’ presence in Malta’s countryside, is the best deterrent against illegal shooting of protected bird species," the FKNK said.

"This is the only way forward for the future of sustainable hunting."
