I read with interest the article entitled The Eucalyptus Tree (September 11) and wish to make the following proposal.
As Malta seems to have the ideal climate and geography for these trees, I wish to suggest the abundant planting of various species of eucalyptus.
Such a move will not only attract more bees but will be well suited to koalas. The koala population in Australia is in need of protection and, since September is Save the Koala month, an expatriation programme can be considered to populate Malta’s existing eucalyptus trees and future tree growth.
This will bring immense benefit to the eco-tourism industry of Malta and will greatly aid in the preservation of this endangered marsupial. As a protected species, hunters will have to focus their sights elsewhere, thereby leaving migrating birds perched in these trees alone.
