The longest-running play in the history of modern theatre –Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap – is set to hit the Maltese stage this October, in time to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

The Mousetrap is perhaps the definitive murder mystery play of all time. It opened in the West End of London in 1952 and has been running continuously ever since.

It is also known for its twist ending, and audiences are asked not to reveal it after leaving the theatre.

The play is set in the Great Hall of Monkswell Manor and opens with news of the murder of a woman in London.

The action then moves to Monkswell Manor itself, which has recently been converted to a guesthouse, run by an enthusiastic couple, Mollie and Giles Ralston.

Their first four guests arrive: Christopher Wren, Mrs Boyle, Major Metcalf and Miss Casewell.

They become snowed in together and learn of the murder. An additional traveller, Mr Paravicini, arrives stranded after he ran his car into a snowdrift, but he makes his hosts uneasy. So the scene is set for the classic whodunit par excellence, intriguing audiences down the years.

Christie gave her grandson the rights to the play and, performance rights have been tightly controlled ever since. Outside of the West End, only one version of the play can be performed annually, and under the contract terms of the play; no film adaptation can be produced until the West End production has been closed for at least six months.

MADC is exceptionally proud to have been granted the rights and the opportunity to stage The Mousetrap at the Manoel Theatre, along with 60 other national theatres worldwide, giving audiences in Malta the unique opportunity to watch this most famous play.

The Mousetrap is directed by Polly March and features a star-studded cast, inclu-ding Manuel Cauchi, Jo Car-uana, Malcolm Galea, Stefan Cachia Zammit, Sue Scantelbury, Chiara Hyzler, Toby Von Brockdorff and Jean-Marc Cafa.

The Mousetrap runs on October 18-20 and 25-27 and booking opens tomorrow. Tickets can be purchased by calling 2124 6389.
