A 32-year-old Bulgarian who lived in Malta was today sentenced to an 18-month jail term for the violent, indecent assault on a Swiss woman who cannot be named by court order.

Magistrate Doreen Clark also brought into force an 18-month suspended jail term Yulian Vasilev Iliev had been given for stealing €5,000 from the bar where he used to work. This brings his total jail time to three years.

Mr Vasilev Iliev was today found guilty of sexually assaulting the Swiss woman who, by her own admission, had spent a night out drinking in Paceville when the incident happened in August last year.

She said she was at Clique and had started to speak to the accused about the tattoos on his arm. However, she could not remember a lot of what happened afterwards.

She could remember, however, seeing him again near the door of her apartment and he followed her into the common area.

He forcefully pushed her against the wall, started to remove her clothes and sexually assaulted her.

She remembered biting his private part.

The aggressor left as a Spanish guy who lived in the same block came down the stairs. The Spaniard helped the Swiss woman up to his flat and called an ambulance.

A court appointed expect found her injuries compatible with sexual assault and found the aggressor’s version not credible, especially since CCTV footage showed him leaving the block arranging his trousers.

When asked why he had been arranging his trousers, he said it was because he had lost a lot of weight.
