At least 100 electric charging points will be set up across Malta and Gozo in the coming weeks as part of a feasibility study on electric vehicles which will begin this month, the Transport Minister said earlier today.

Addressing a press conference about the DemoEV project, minister Joe Mizzi said the project would provide definitive information on the feasibility of using electric vehicles on the island.

The partially EU-funded €1.9 million project was announced by then transport minister Austin Gatt back in 2011.

Last June the transport ministry unveiled a fleet of 24 electric vehicles to be used in the pilot assessment project.

Mr Mizzi said that in the coming weeks the vehicles, which have mostly been allocated to volunteers, will be used to log journeys both for personal and commercial use.

The minister said a number of government personnel, himself included, would also be making use of the vehicles. Over the past months the minister has been using an electric Renault Fleunce. The first electric charging point was set up outside the Transport Ministry in June.

The initial feasibility study will last eight weeks until the end of November.
