The Malta Communications Authority (MCA) has just launched an upgraded version of its free Wi-Fi locator app. The upgraded app is more user-friendly and includes information about additional Wi-Fi hotspots set up since October 2012, when the app was originally launched.
Users with Android based devices can today locate over 185 free Wi-Fi hotspots, which the MCA operates across the Maltese islands in collaboration with various local councils, NGOs and other government institutions. If the users’ location is available via GPS, the application is able to detect the closest 10 hotspots and provide real-time updates of the distance and direction to each hotspot.
Users also have the facility to change the map view according to individual preferences and report faults via e-mail if necessary.
The app, ranked in the top 10 most popular free downloads on Google Play, was originally developed by students participating in the MCA’s student support programme and was later enhanced by Daniel Schembri, a Maltese developer and founder of devIT Ltd, currently working in the UK.
