Police are still investigating some 250 reports filed against Fantasy Tours, with would-be holidaymakers claiming to have lost close to €375,000 in total, Times of Malta has learnt.

Investigations continue into the sudden closure of the travel company, which cancelled a number of holidays which had been paid for by clients.

In reply to questions sent by this newspaper, police confirmed more than 250 official complaints against the travel agency had been received and that the amount allegedly lost was €374,058.

The company axed tours via text message three weeks ago, just hours after urging those who had booked holidays to also pay for excursions.

Sources close to the investigation said police were still looking into each report so could not yet officially indicate whether they would be issuing any charges in connection with the case.

Once enough evidence is compiled, misappropriation charges will be filed

Police have questioned a company official over payments made for holidays that never materialised.

The official has been released on police bail, sources said.

According to the company register of the Malta Financial Services Authority, the person responsible for Fantasy Tours – which also operates under Golden Travel Club Limited – is Karl Azzopardi, of Mellieħa.

Police stations continue to receive reports from aggrieved customers.

Times of Malta reported last week that Fantasy Tours’ licence to operate was renewed for three consecutive years even though the company had not paid the Malta Tourism Authority fees amounting to almost €4,000.

The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority had warned customers against Fantasy Tours last October but it appears this warning was not heeded.

The consumers’ watchdog is also receiving complaints from would-be holidaymakers whose vacations were cancelled abruptly.

The reports made to the MCCAA will be taken immediately before the Consumer Claims Tribunal because, contrary to usual procedure, mediation with the operator is not possible in cases where a company declares bankruptcy.
