The Qala local council has formally lodged a complaint with the planning authority following reports that a quarry on the outskirts of the locality is being “illegally” excavated to extend its footprint.

In a statement, the council dismissed accusations made by marine biologist Alan Deidun that it turned a blind eye to the development, saying it had been objecting to plans to extend the quarry for years due to the social and environmental impact on the locality.

The council said it had been consistently against all forms of development that could damage the environment, citing its objection against the Qala Creek project.
