Tourist dies in gondola crash

A German tourist has died in Venice after the gondola he was riding in crashed into a larger boat ferrying passengers along the Grand Canal.

Venice fire chief of staff Giovanni Carlesso said the crash occurred around noon near the highly trafficked Rialto bridge.

He says the vaporetto, or the public ‘water bus’ that plies the lagoon city, was either docking or pulling out of the Rialto stop and apparently didn’t see the nearby gondola, which was carrying five members of a visiting German family. All five passengers and the gondolier ended up in the water.

Mr Carlesso said the father was believed to have been crushed to death in the crash. His three-year-old child was taken to hospital in Padua with head injuries. (PA)

Blast at Egypt’s mission in Libya

A small explosion rocked the Egyptian consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi yesterday, blowing out its windows and those of adjacent buildings, witnesses said.

A policeman at the scene said an Egyptian security guard was injured in the explosion, apparently caused by a small bomb hidden in a briefcase. At least five cars were damaged, a Reuters witness said.

Police closed off the area and were collecting evidence.

Egyptian security forces are conducting a crackdown on Muslim Brotherhood supporters following last month’s ousting of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in Benghazi last year after Islamist gunmen attacked the US consulate during a protest by a mob angry over a film they said insulted the Prophet Mohammed. (Reuters)

Obama is to return to Washington today to close out an eight-day vacation on the island. (Reuters)
