A design for a monument to Dom Mintoff were unveiled today by the Għaqda Duminku Mintoff, a year after the former prime minister's death.

Other designs were unveiled in May and the society plans to use them for monuments outside Mr Mintoff's residence in Tarxien and the other in Gozo. The designs are by Sergio Gauci and Julian Bugeja.

The latest design is by Johann Scerri and his wife, both of Cospicua. The society said this would be the grand monument to Mr Mintoff but no decision has been taken yet on where it will be built, since the Labour Party itself is reportedly planning a monument in Cosipcua, Mr Mintoff's hometown and the bastion of his support.

The society has no direct links to the PL. The PL said it would reveal designs for its own monument to Mr Mintoff on Tuesday.

The Scerri design features Mr Mintoff on a pedestal along with the torch, which was the symbol of the Labour Party, the workers, and a representation of the workers British sailors preparing to leave Malta.

The monument will be built in marble by Ronald Pisani.
