A satirical Facebook page known for uploading local bloopers and compromising photos was voted the most popular Maltese page in an unofficial ballot yesterday.

Set up in 2009, Malta FB Page Awards invited Maltese social media users to vote for their favourite local page and comment on their reasons for frequenting it.

More than 33,000 people voted in the three-week competition, which saw a number of pages vying for the top spot.

A total of 9,000 people voted for the winning page, Malta Diżastru Totali (Malta, a complete disaster), more than doubling the amount it garnered when it won last year’s vote.

One of the page’s anonymous administrators told Times of Malta he was glad all the hard work had paid off.

“We try to show the problems facing people all over the island. We receive about 150 messages a day and try our best to give everyone a chance to voice their frustrations,” the administrator said.

The satirical page was closely followed by popular etymology page Kelma Kelma (word for word). The page features curiosities about the Maltese language and has received substantial following in recent months.

Set up by university lecturer Michael Spagnol, the page is divided into 11 sections, including words of the day like bużillis and sapjoseswalli as well as new words making their way into the Maltese language such as tifrejpja and tillajkja.

In third place a newcomer to the local social media scene, Malta Burgers, took the polls by storm beating popular standards such as Malta Weather and Malta 360.

The page rates local fast food restaurants, offering a stern critique on burger flipping skills as well as the crispiness ratio of French fries and side salads.
