Casa Arkati, the first private home for the elderly in Malta, which currently hosts 120 residents, will be able to take up to 180 guests following an extension project which will be starting shortly.

This was announced by Caremalta chairman Nazzareno Vassallo during an event commemorating the Mosta home’s 20th anniversary. Casa Arkati welcomed its first three residents in June 1993 with a workforce of six employees. The home today employs 110 staff.

The home hosted George Curmi (Il-Pusé) and his band, who entertained members of staff, residents and their family members. Family and Social Solidarity Minister Marie Louise Coleiro Preca also attended.

Addressing over 400 guests, Mr Vassallo spoke about the home’s evolutionary process and how, over 20 years, Caremalta Ltd had consolidated its position as a leading private care provider for the elderly, operating eight facilities – Villa Messina in Rabat, Roseville in Attard, Żejtun Home, Bormla Home, Dar il-Madonna tal-Mellieħa, Zammit Clapp Hospital Residential Home in St Julian’s and Prince of Wales in Sliema.

Caremalta CEO Natalie Briffa Farrugia said 67 per cent of residents who had stayed at Casa Arkati over the years were women, with an average age of 75 for men and 82 for women.

Around 66 per cent of residents hailed from the central part of Malta, mostly from Sliema and St Julian’s, while 29 per cent and five per cent came from the northern and southern parts respectively.

Ms Coleiro Preca stressed that the government was actively working to develop the concept of active ageing in Malta and explained that the elderly deserved to live actively since old age should not merely be considered as the last part of life but as part of a process in the person’s development.

During the celebration, three longest-serving employees – Carmen Debono, Euphemia Muscat and Dorothy Iguanez – were honoured for their 20 years of dedicated service.

To conclude the celebration, a special edition of the company’s annual publication Carenet was presented to Mr Vassallo. The publication features a history of Casa Arkati told through a series of interviews, taking the reader through the 20-year journey of the residential home.
